Progress

Well spot the dog has been and gone, mainly due to reproducing someone elses work is illegal but hey now i get to introduce Rufus the Dog. Rufus will be the star of my AR popup book. He will take part in an adventure to find his ball.

Unfortunately the models on the book will have to be static for the moment due to the software i am using but hopefully in the future will allow for some limited animation. Thus bringing a book truly to life in front of children allowing them to dvelop a thirst for reading.

Logo Development

Logo, not having conceived a logo as of yet thought it was about time. My original thought process was a kind of food time machine based upon an already famous design such as that of the tardis or HG Wells, but after a few preliminary ideas they looked pretty rubbish.

Therefore a different approach was needed, something based around a kitchen utensil perhaps. And then came my triumphant idea, an egg timer.

Yes the humble egg timer, measures time for cooking why not for food. Therefore i changed the dial to read dates and the timer to spin the opposite direction and you get a food time machine.

As I said before the design has changed due to the orbital model I’m basing the application on and my lack of AS3.0 knowledge. It seems to be a complete shift from AS2.0 and I’m struggling with the inner workings.

Well, i thought there would be more coverage of the history of food but records are shaky and people seem not to be interested. Unfortunately this has left me with the rather unreliable source of wikipedia. This data can be found here.

This simply shows when certain foodstuffs were introduced into Britain.

Well its been a few weeks and progress is good. Instead of scrolling back through the screen the application will be side scrolling. Unfortunately there is no indication of the dates i the ark of taste and thererfore is impossible to do with this data. A few hours of scouring the web has led to a timeline of when food was introduced to britain. This data will now become the mainstay of my project.

The book design!

Well the book design is simple! To simply replace the current images of a childrens book with barcode tags!This would look something like this!

These tags would then be recognised using a camera and a 3d model would be overlaid onto the tags by the software.

The System!

Like i proposed only a few minutes ago, a childrens popup/picture book will be recreated in 3d right in front of there eyes! This will utilise barcode style tags to display a 3d model on a page! These barcode tags can be recognised by most cameras and software overlays a specific image onto the tags. The user would then be able to see theses images using a special pair of glasses to utilise the camera and software combination.

Fed up of those old cardboard pop up books, well now we bring you a 3d book! My idea is relatively simple to take a well know children’s book such as spot the dog and retell the story using 3d instead of 2d pictures.

Augmented Reality!

Well really its easier to show this than explain it, but i’ll give it a go. Basically augmented reality is combining some aspects of virtual reality into the real world, for example an architect could use augmented reality to show what a project around a current buidling would look like.Some examples are shown below!
